The Liberal government is introducing a bill that would establish a foreign agents registry, requiring individuals attempting to influence Canadian democracy to disclose their ties with other countries. Bill C-70, tabled by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc on Monday, would also equip the Canadian Security Intelligence Service with an increased ability to communicate potential threats to non-governmental stakeholders and proposes three new criminal offences related to committing acts associated with attempted foreign interference.

“Canada is a strong, open and free democracy,” said LeBlanc. “These strengths, however, can make Canada a target for those wanting to advance their interests to the detriment of our own.”
