Ontario MP Chandra Arya's disqualification from the Liberal leadership race has sparked concerns about the fairness and transparency of the selection process. The party's decision to exclude Arya, who was the first to announce his candidacy, has led to speculation and calls for clarification.

OTTAWA — Ontario member of Parliament Chandra Arya announced on Sunday that the Liberal party informed him he is no longer a contender in the race to become its next leader. Arya, who was the first to declare his candidacy to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, stated he is awaiting formal confirmation from the Liberals and evaluating his options moving forward.

'This decision raises significant questions about the legitimacy of the leadership race and, by extension, the legitimacy of the next prime minister of Canada,' Arya expressed in a social media statement. However, he refrained from elaborating on his concerns or disclosing the reasons provided by the party for disqualifying his candidacy. Representatives of the Liberal party did not immediately respond to inquiries on Sunday afternoon. Arya was among seven individuals who submitted the necessary paperwork and a $50,000 deposit last week to join the race. Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney are widely considered the frontrunners. Carney's team declined to comment on Arya's statement and remained silent on whether his candidacy had been approved. Other candidates who have submitted the required documents include former Government House leader Karina Gould, MP Jaime Battiste, and former MPs Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis. The party has a maximum of 10 days to finalize the candidate approvals. The deadline for registering to vote in the leadership contest is Monday, while candidates are obligated to submit their full entry fee of $350,000 by February 17. The Liberals are scheduled to select their next leader, who will also become the next prime minister of Canada, on March 9.
