Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski indicated his support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's potential decision to prorogue Parliament to avoid a non-confidence vote. Powlowski believes this could provide a chance for the Liberal party to reset, potentially choose a new leader, and ultimately lead to a genuine election.
Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski said he would support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau 's decision to prorogue parliament to avoid losing a non-confidence vote . The Liberal representative stated on Wednesday that it could provide the Liberal party with an opportunity to reset and potentially choose a new leader if Trudeau decides to step down after more than nine years as Canada's leader.
The prime minister is facing increasing pressure from within his own party to resign, and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is almost certain to vote in favor of the next vote of non-confidence, which could occur by the end of the month when Parliament reconvenes. Powlowski stated that prorogation is a tool available in a parliamentary system and has been used by past prime ministers, including Conservative Stephen Harper, at some point during their terms. He emphasized, however, that there must be a reason for its use. Powlowski expressed his belief that many people hope prorogation will lead to a leadership race and a new leader who can guide the party into an election. The second-term MP, first elected in 2019, explained that prorogation allows for a pause in Parliament and a reset. He stated that while it would be a political move to regroup, it would position the party for a genuine election. When asked about the fairness to the Canadian public, Powlowski argued that it is not significantly different from the current situation. He pointed out that Parliament has effectively been suspended for the past three months due to the confidence dispute with the Conservatives and the opposition, who have blocked the passage of any legislation. He concluded that he does not believe much would change as a result. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre suggested last month that prorogating Parliament at this time might be unconstitutional, arguing that it would not give the opposition an opportunity to challenge the confidence of a 'crumbling' Liberal government
