The five candidates vying to be the next leader of the Ontario Liberal Party squared off in a debate in Thunder Bay last week.Yasir Naqvi held cabinet portfolios under former premier Kathleen Wynne between 2013 and 2018, and has served federally as the Ottawa Centre MP since 2021.
[I also want to] listen to health care providers, our education sector and social service and community service providers, [which will help us] to build a platform that not only speaks to Northern issues, but actually will be implemented in the north, which is very different than Southern Ontario.” We have to work with industry and communities, but most importantly, we have to work with indigenous communities.
Naqvi: We need to find more health care workers, including the doctors and nurses and other health care professionals. I have had the opportunity to speak with a lot of internationally trained doctors [who are willing] at a moment's notice to move to Northern Ontario. I [have] met doctors who come from other parts of the world who are actually now practicing in Northern Ontario, and they love it.
The second thing we need to do is that province owns a lot of land, developed lands [which is] not agricultural lands. We need to start developing that [and give it] at a nominal price, especially for affordable and social housing so that we can bring the cost of land acquisition out of the system and bring more affordable housing at a cheaper price.
