The Liberal government is implementing stricter gun control measures by banning 324 additional makes and models of assault-style firearms. The announcement comes on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal.

The Liberal government is banning even more firearms as it seeks to fulfill a long-standing promise to enact the tightest gun restrictions in a generation.

The government said 14,521 firearms are affected in total, and all future variants of the listed firearms are prohibited, even if they are not named outright in the regulations. The Liberals had previously sought to render more guns illegal than what was on the 2020 list via a bill known as C-21, introduced in 2022. It initially laid out a handgun freeze and raised criminal penalties for gun crimes, among other measures.

The bill did, however, create a new technical definition that if met, would render a firearm illegal. It only applies to guns designed and manufactured after the bill came into force. That created what some called the “gap list” – the guns still legal because they weren’t captured in the 2020 regulations nor in the forward-looking definition.

Owners are currently covered by an amnesty that has been extended numerous times as the government has failed to get its buyback program off the ground. That same amnesty – in place until Oct. 30, 2025 – will apply for owners of the newly banned guns.
