Good for your energy bills, but maybe not for your picture quality

The EU’s new requirements could conversely, though, have made it easier for the brands that HAVE signed up for the next phase of the US energy efficiency agreement to make their move. After all, the standards targeted by the US agreement are already now being met by TVs that have had to meet the EU’s demands.

Of course, any plan from manufacturers that can reduce our spiralling energy bills is welcome on one level. Especially when it comes to standby power consumption . There has to be at least a little concern, though, that such concerted and time-pressured pushes for reduced power consumption could have a negative effect on picture quality. After all, today’s high dynamic range video sources need a lot of brightness, and that brightness inevitably needs to fed by energy.

At this point I should stress that it’s not my intention to be overly dramatic about what an ‘obsession’ with power consumption might end up doing to TV picture quality in the coming years.
