Canadians value life — except for the lives of the elderly, the ill, the poor and the youngMedical assistance in dying is about compassion, avoiding suffering and the fundamental rights of an individual. If a person is suffering from a medical condition and meets the criteria — which does not include a lack of social supports — MAID is an end-of-life option for them to choose, if they want.
In many jurisdictions across Canada, mature minors already have the right to make important decisions regarding their health care, including the right to consent to or refuse lifesaving medical treatment. With special eligibility criteria in place, and appropriate safeguards, mature minors should be allowed the right to choose MAID.
Indeed, the Conservative party’s future “electability” hinges precisely on its political ability to appeal to a majority of Canadians who are simply not ready to accept a more self-reliant conservative economic agenda within a Canadian political landscape that has been consistently defined by a voting public with an insatiable appetite for government services and an unending tolerance and indifference for government mismanagement.
It’s both distressing and dangerous that such blatant wrongdoing can occur openly in public institutions supposedly charged with teaching candour and validity, as well as demonstrating role model leadership to their students.
