Readers discuss the problem of car congestion in Stanley Park

Just one point, though, where should the tourists leave their cars when coming to our lovely city? In the suburbs? That wouldn’t work too well, just cause another set of problems. As well as the simple fact that Stanley Park is enormous, how would people, young and old, get around? Line up for shuttle buses, you say? There’s another headache.

We locals also love our park as well as bring visitors. We try to go mid-week, but that can’t always be done either, so we put up with the traffic and crowds because we love showing its beauty to non-locals. We don’t seem to mind the small inconvenience we go through.Article content Perhaps we need to turn all of this upside down and move on with more practical solutions. First, municipalities should be legally bound to have community development plans in place before receiving any financial assistance from provincial or federal governments. These plans should cover at least the next 10 to 15 years and include all services and supports for healthy, affordable living.

Third, highrise towers are not the only solution. This paper has frequently reported on varied home developments in other cities and countries that are more inclusive for solo residents, families with children, people in aging demographics, and people with disabilities. Community plans should focus on these options for development and less on “bigger is better.”Article content
