Letters to The Sun, June 6: One’s home should be one’s safe place
As one ages, one becomes fearful of many things — one’s ability to hear, see and function, and to get about as independently as possible. An elderly person should not have to be fearful of his or her environment, especially if that fear is caused by intimidation of any kind. One’s home should be one’s safe place, whether in long-term care or otherwise. The issues Lori Culbert brings out in this article represent a tragic failure of Canada as a nation.
For years, politicians of all stripes have talked about these issues and what they are going to do about them if elected, and yet the problems continue. I believe they continue because politicians and the “haves” of this country lack the will to take the steps necessary to bring these problems to an end. In a land of plenty, too many Canadians are prepared to accept the glaring inequalities that exist.
It is true that many Canadians, if not most, know more about American politicians and the structure of their government than we do about our own. Recently, with the disturbing news coming from south of the border, I have heard endless laments on American media about the demise of “the moral compass of the world, the destruction of the template for democracy in world” … the list goes on.
What I didn’t know and most certainly would never have known if I only sourced my news from an American outlet, is that Canada “have more than the U.S., which takes in one third the number of immigrants per capita.“
