Letters to The Sun, July 4, 2020: Allegations of systemic racism in the VPD inaccurate
Thanks to Vaughn Palmer for teasing out the important issues with respect to the sudden and exorbitant increases in insurance premiums and deductibles for condo strata corporations. The role for government in this instance is to put in place building code requirements that give long term security in the plumbing infrastructure and legislating requirements that strata corporations have plumbing and fire inspections annually to prevent damage due to water and fire.
Expecting government to take this issue on without demonstrating a commitment to making changes in lifestyle that have a potentially harmful effect on neighbours is failing to take responsibility for some of the cause of the problem of rising insurance rates. The government benefits from having the dense housing complexes because of the increased tax base and therefore needs to take on ensuring their viability.
