Letters to the Editor — Roadside trash, slave history, foster care, war, baseball, rejected ballots | Opinion
Readers shared their futility in getting trash picked up; suggested the U.S. slave trade is a valid history topic; pointed out candidates’ sniping over children; called war what it is; feared for baseball’s future; and saw two sides of the balloting issue.Re: “Dallas man’s fight for a cleaner city,” by Davie Lieber, March 13 Metro column.
There were 27,233 Atlantic slave trade voyages, three-quarters of which succeeded in disembarking slaves in the Americas. Eleven million Africans were forcibly carried abroad, more than 9 million of them to the Americas. At the height of the British slave trade, in the 1790s, one large slave vessel left England for Africa every other day. French slave ships left Africa with an average load of close to 320 captives; one such vessel sailed with 900 slaves.
It’s also sheer nerve on Abbott’s part to accuse O’Rourke of “politicizing the well-being of Texas children,” considering that Abbott weaponized CPS against the families of transgender kids in a blatant political appeal to the extremists in his party. Invading another country is a war crime, so why make a distinction? The term war crime is a redundancy, such as revert back or plan ahead.I am thrilled that the MLB season has been saved and the billionaire owners and millionaire players can pursue the child’s game they love. With a rapidly shrinking fan base and the inevitable increase in ticket prices, parking and concessions, I think baseball at the major league level will slowly become irrelevant.

You asked for a gardening column, so we bring you a gardening column: Letter from the EditorAs it happened, we had a candidate at the ready. Last year, we put out the call for people interested in writing freelance Metro columns for us, and one of the people who applied is Susan Brownstein, who discussed gardening in her application letter.
