The first great unfairness in life is the accident of birth. Our fate seems so dependent on an incidental circumstance of geography, the invisible lines of arbitrary borders. Our privilege is undeserved. Let us reflect on all Afghan refugees who will likely not be as lucky as was the Hamidi family in this instance.: A school in North London, under the guidance of a new chair, has been greatly improved. To my eye, it appears to be pretty much the work of two dedicated individuals, not something inevitable under the system there.
It would be wonderful if every school had a guiding genius. But in the real world, structural design to optimize for desired results is usually a far more reliable pathway to success.At Brandon University, we undertook a review of some contributing factors that correlated with students who had high entering grades, but failed to find success in their first year of postsecondary study.
A school where students are required to enter the classroom, stand in silence and ask for permission to sit. A school where students enter three different learning streams, not based on their preferences or aspirations, but their perceived abilities. The Globe recently published glowing obits on the untimely passing of Michael Blake and Joe Ziegler. Both were lions of the Canadian stage, but I am sure their names were unfamiliar to many readers.
