These events continue to this day. We recognize birthdays, retirements and all life-changing events. The importance of these affiliations during trying times should never be underestimated. For the last three years, my dog needed two medicines that went up from around $100 a month to over $180 per month. Annual visits to the vet went up to around $100 not including medicine. Heartworm tests plus vaccinations at “low cost” tents in parking lots went up to over $100. Of course, flea and tick prevention along with dog food went up a lot this year as well. My dog’s final trip to the emergency vet was well over $200.
While I agree with most of your editorial on the tax relief plan, as a former Appraisal Review Board member for a number of years, I disagree with your comment that including elected members on local appraisal boards is “regrettable.”Presently, the board is selected by the various taxing entities that benefit from the values set by the appraisal district. The board has no authority to set policy to make the appraisal protest procedure fair as it is presently stacked against the taxpayer.
There are many acts an appraisal district can do that will level the playing field for the taxpayer and district, but the district will never, on its own, take such action. Elected board members can raise these matters as it appears that those selected by the taxing entities will not.
