Letters to the Editor, June 3, 2023
Betsy McCaughey is absolutely right. Shoplifting is not about poverty . Over the past several years, including pre pandemic, I have grown increasingly upset about the shoplifting I witness every time I am in a retail store. On different occasions I have spoken to staff about it, and they all say they have been told not to engage. The police will not get involved, and apparently under $5,000 is not a crime.
High school boys in private school uniforms grabbing handfuls of sweets from bulk bins, thus contaminating the balance in the bin, and a young man walking out of the LCBO with two bottles of scotch and waving his thank you while smirking at the cashier. This is one afternoon. Imagine the loss to retail sales in a week, a month, etc.
