A compilation of Letters to the Editor for July 20

I’m writing in response to the letter from Sally Roenisch in the July 14 edition of the Calgary Herald regarding the airport-to-Calgary rail link. She states she wouldn’t use it because she doesn’t want to haul her bags and carry-ons on the LRT with “no help at the airport.

But now Bombardier and General Dynamics want to come up with a made-in-Canada solution using the Global Express 6500 as a basis. If this is not already an active maritime patrol platform, all I see are many warning lights for us Canadian taxpayers. All R&D would come from Ottawa Cost overruns are expected, entry into service dates delayed and operational performance possibly compromised without follow-up system upgrades. This has been the track record of home grown solutions in the past.

Is this made-in-Canada proposal worth the dollar expense and variance of commonality with Canada’s Allies? I think not.Article contentMark Dixon’s input re the Ukraine in last Saturday’s Herald hits the nail on the head. Ukraine is fighting for its own existence — true. But, they are also fighting for freedom and democracy worldwide! And to think two politicians, one from the U.K. and one from the U.S. actually dared to suggest that the Ukraine should thank “us” is beyond belief.

We owe far, far more to the Ukraine than they could possibly ever owe to the rest of the world! Zelensky is an incredibly strong human being in the way he is leading his people to stand up to Russia, in spite of immense human losses.
