In today’s letters to the editor: Jean Chrétien; Justin Trudeau; the Liberal leadership race; Mark Carney and Elon Musk;

Former prime minister Jean Chrétien greets people anxious to shake his hand following Canada Day ceremonies in Ottawa on July 1, 1996.: Since this Liberal government has been in power, I have become more and more concerned about cohesion in this country.

Enough apologizing from our leaders. Enough hand-wringing about perceived historical wrongs and present-day hurt feelings. It would be good if we reminded our schoolchildren that our benefits didn’t happen by chance, but came as a legacy from our long-suffering, hard-working and courageous ancestors.

Would that we could elect a mature leader, an adult who displays the “spine” with which Mr. Chrétien credits Canadians. However, over time, my respect for Mr. Trudeau grew. I saw a man who never seemed to lose optimism about what could be done to make Canada a better place for all Canadians, and who always seemed to do his best to make that happen.

While we can look forward to Liberal leadership candidates eulogizing the Trudeau 2.0 era, the only void I’m keen to fill is the answer to the question: How did we get here and what are they going to do about it?: I love your headline. I only wish you had published it in October of 2015, October of 2019 and September of 2021.: The Liberal tradition has been to alternate between French and English leaders.

So consider Justin Trudeau to not exactly fit the pattern as someone who feels both English and French equally, and thus is a “mulligan.” Liberal voters should be free to start fresh.: A letter-writer is reserving judgment on Mark Carney’s integrity until his compensation package with Brookfield Asset Management is revealed.
