In today’s letters to the editor: the Liberals; Chrystia Freeland; Canada Post; Donald Trump; U.S. health insurance
Chrystia Freeland finishes a news conference at the Embassy of Canada as she concludes a two-day visit to Washington, on June 13, 2019.: A prime minister has the discretion to shuffle his cabinet as he sees fit, and in doing so Justin Trudeau offered Chrystia Freeland a key posting to oversee Canada-U.S. relations at a critical juncture when strong diplomacy – and a strong Canadian government – are essential to our national interests.
Now it appears that Ms. Freeland’s comments about the privilege of serving were empty, and neither she nor Mr. Carney will be in the cabinet. Canada is the loser in her seeming inability to set aside personal pride and ambition. Canada Post should get out of the delivery business entirely, leaving individual deliveries to private, competitive business. Instead, it could continue to collect and sort mail, then install satellite offices as needed for individual pickup of mail and purchase of postage stamps and wrapping material. To me, Canada Post staff offer something that is becoming more scarce in our dealings with large corporations: personal service. The staff are consistent, so we recognize and greet each other.
In the meantime, I’m guessing that front-line workers have lost thousands of dollars each. That loss takes a lot of making up over the course of the next contract, and may even result in an overall financial loss. Blow it up and start again. Canada Post properties could be sold for housing to reduce the cost of the reconstruction. The Canadian Postal Service Charter mandates universal, reliable, accountable, secure delivery services, at a reasonable cost, to all communities in Canada.
If Canada Post can provide additional services such as postal banking without negatively impacting its core mandate, great. If not, give up the idea.
