On a grander scale, I am grateful for our ancestors who settled on the shores of North America, in time established their independence from Great Britain, and in the Declaration of Independence wrote a document that has served as a model for other people seeking independence, declaring what they described as “self evident truths that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Finally Houston is considering new building codes which will move us toward the soft beautiful glow that allows our eyes to just relax and see. At last we may someday enjoy a few more stars in our sky, a good night’s sleep in our bedrooms and a less cranky Houston. That surgery was the culmination of a long circuitous journey of chemotherapy, self-awareness, empowerment, self advocacy and, finally, life-saving surgery. It was a long, hard journey fraught with tears, pain, confusion, laughter and joy. But I would do it over, again, for the experiences that led me to where I am today. I know it’s hard to believe, but I am thankful for the journey.
