Schneidereit suggested the government’s interest in getting its legislation passed by making information about weapons the shooter used made public “looks like politics, not policing.” It is not political interference. It is a legitimate response by the Minister of Public Safety.We have read and heard much from various media that criticizes RCMP Commissioner Lucki and federal minister Blair for attempting to learn more about guns used by G. Wortman.

In the Ottawa region alone, 75 of 315 positions in the RCMP’s protection unit are unstaffed — a vacancy rate of 24 per cent. Similar vacancy rates afflict the RCMP’s close protection units in other parts of the country, based on info from the RCMP. Based on the shortages, where federal ministers are even cancelling events because of threats and no protection, one truly has to wonder what can be done. Numerous RCMP detachments across Nova Scotia are essentially closed between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. because of an inadequate number of officers.
