We may now use newer phrases but the concepts are old, and Calgary’s city council of the day was visionary in adopting these concepts to aid in planning new development in a more fiscally, socially and environmentally sustainable way.I commiserate with a previous writer struggling to find swimming lessons for her children, but there is another angle to consider.

Both my daughters have been lifeguards and swim instructors at local pools. They are paid minimum wage or just slightly above, and carry a great deal of personal responsibility. In the course of their duties, they have been spat on, urinated on, vomited on, slapped, bitten, punched, groped, insulted and disobeyed by the children; and yelled at, cursed and even propositioned by parents.
