How safe are Halifax's bridges? | SaltWire #halifax #harbour #safety #newstodayThe total loss of life in this disaster sums to 251 men, including 78 from the S.S. Newfoundland and all 173 from the S.S. Southern Cross. This says nothing of the 88 survivors from the Newfoundland who suffered related infirmities, including amputations. Not to mention the psychological trauma that all suffered, no doubt for the rest of their lives. Their families, too.
Described as “cowards,” “quit” and “stragglers,” these 34 men have been otherwise overlooked, ignored, and swept aside. The first of the 34 to turn around, and arrive back onboard, was Tobias Cooper, Bonavista. Immediately interrogated and dressed down by Kean, Cooper explained:"We didn’t see anything to go on fer, sir. … We saw the crowd a’ead of us climbin’ the pinnacles looking fer seals an’ findin’ none, sir. Then we was outdistanced be the others. ‘Twas plain wedder was coming on, so we come back, sir.”
These sealers were deeply experienced and, as such, could see clearly the signs of the oncoming storm. They knew what they were doing before others, some who did not bear the risks, would be proved tragically wrong.
