In the letter above, Ron MacDonald responds in part to Joe Ward’s May 23 letter Post (‘CBRM needs more mayoral candidates,’ by claiming that former mayor Cecil Clarke maintained a home in Little Bras d’Or.But Macdonald conveniently left out the fact that Cecil also owns a condo in Halifax where he has predominately resided for the past four years.
Cecil’s “love for our home”, as mentioned by MacDonald, is a concern and should be to all CBRM’s residents as it overlooks Cecil’s claim of several years ago that we have received our “fair share” of the roughly $3 billion in equalization payments that the province receives from the federal government every year.
Nobody is saying that Clarke or McDougall-Merrill are not nice people because they both are, but being a nice person is not addressing problems such as high taxation. When Cecil ran for the Progressive Conservative Party’s provincial leadership in 2018, his primary opponent was Tim Houston, who is now our current premier. It was common knowledge, even among the PC MLAs from Cape Breton, that there was no love lost between the two men.
