I just noticed signs erected to show that $3.6 million will be spent on a paved trail from Logy Bay Road to Portugal Cove and $7.1 million will be spent from Paul Reynolds to Majors Path.
You should note that this $7.1 million covers just two miles of paving. Where is the rest of the money being spent? I would like to know how much we in N.L. are contributing to these shared paths and what purpose they will serve from November to May. I noticed on Access St. John's that trees will be uprooted but we are assured more will be planted. How do they justify planting seedlings to replace 50-plus-year-old trees?I know St. John's is trying to push shared used paths and I am all for that.
As a walker, I have encountered many bikers on these trails now and I can tell you very few have a bell and very few stick to a speed limit. In my opinion, more pedestrians will leave these trails and use sidewalks so it will end up being the biking trials the city always promised. I just wish that those in council would be more open and provide a monthly update in a newspaper, something that is available to all citizens, especially those without a smart phone. It will be too late when they start digging up trails and replacing them with asphalt.SaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
