Instead of giving back money they've already collected through taxes, Barry Imhoff wonders why governments 'just don’t collect it in the first place.' cdnpoli nlpoli

I am talking about how governments across Canada have taken to writing their citizens cheques. The Federal Liberals are going to refund most of the carbon tax they are collecting. Other than keep an army of bureaucrats busy writing cheques, I question the logic in collecting money from tax payers only to give it back. Though judging from the federal governments success at paying their own employees with their infamous payroll system, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the check to arrive.
Alberta is the latest to catch the cheque-writing disease, though Alberta will be handing out their cash from a budgetary surplus. Ours will no doubt come from the mountain of money we are borrowing. In the final analysis, the whole provincial scheme may simply be a make-work project for our overabundance of government workers who are likely bumping into each other looking for something to do.
