Cross-country skiers compete at Butter Pot Park in Newfoundland. Due to climate change, winter arrives later and later, with the month of March now being peak ski season. I was dismayed to learn that the main road within Butter Pot Park was plowed March 17 to allow access by contractors to the comfort stations.
The Avalon Nordic Ski Club has been a good community partner with the Department of Tourism and Recreation for many years. The club developed new trails at considerable expense and maintains them through volunteer work and financial contributions. In winter, they are used by cross-country skiers and by campers and hikers in the summer and fall.
I find it difficult to understand why it was necessary to do this work at this time, right before a long weekend when there is ample snow on the ground? Surely, this work could have been delayed by several weeks!
