Saturday, Dec. 31, is the deadline to file a 2021 income tax return and still be eligible to receive a cost of living relief cheque in Newfoundland and Labrador. -123RF Stock PhotoLike most Canadians, Nova Scotians are feeling the pinch of soaring inflation with high grocery and fuel prices, higher power bills, significant increases in residential property values and new taxes such as Carbon Tax and federal increases on alcohol starting in April.
Canadians are also paying the highest fuel rates in years while energy companies such as Exxon, Chevron and BP earned profits of $56 billion $35 billion and $28 billion, respectively. These are some of the highest profits on record for any publicly traded oil company ever. Just as alarming is Nova Scotia Power’s recently approved increase in power bills of 14 per cent by January of next year. Having skimmed the surface of the 200-page UARB hearings document, the decision to raise the rates by this amount defies logic, especially when Nova Scotia Power was only requesting increases of 3.3 per cent effective Aug. 1, 2022, Jan. 1, 2023 and Jan. 1, 2024 for a total of 9.9 per cent.
