CFL star Brady Oliveira and realtor Alex Blumberg juggle their jobs, football, a new CBC Gem show about their animal rescue work AND a houseful of dogs.

“We love our life with our four dogs. They make life so much better, so you just find the time to make it work,’” says Brady.

“First things first. Find a partner that loves dogs as much as you do,” says Alex. The couple first met through their shared advocacy work with K9 Advocacy Manitoba, an organization where Brady volunteers. Get a crate or create a space with baby gates.

“A lot of rescue dogs have either never lived in a home before, or have never had that much attention,” explains Alex. Be patient. Don’t overwhelm them and let them come to you when they're ready, she says. If there are other pets in the house, introduce them in neutral territory like the backyard or a park.

This is a great way to bond with your dog. Get them used to your schedule and the things that you love to do. Says Alex, “It's good for us, gets us outside, gets us spending quality time together. And it's worth it every time.

”When they do something positive, reward the behaviour with a treat or tell them what a good dog they were.

“Very quickly, you’re going to start to build that bond and that trust with them to the point where you can just smother their little faces with so much love,” says Alex. Quality time is better than quantity time. Feed them at the same time, schedule walks at the same time.

“Spend lots of time with your new rescue dog, giving them lots of love, affection, treats, walks, letting them hang out with the other dogs in your home,” says Alex. “Pretty much just let them rule your life,” agrees Brady. Hire a dog walker and schedule a dog babysitter for time outside of the house. Get a good vacuum cleaner to deal with dog messes and consider a house cleaner, if your budget allows.

“Every game day I have to get my cuddles. I have to take a nap with all four dogs in the bed. It's a must. It gives me a good mojo heading into a game and fills them with good energy,” says Brady, “And I go out there and I ball out. ”
