The environmentalists drew attention to the day on which, according to their calculations, all renewable resources in the current year would be used up. Photo: Fabian Sommer/dpa Fifty years ago, humanity was just about living within the capacity of the Earth. Since then, our footprint on our planet has increased massively.
This year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on August 1. In 1971, it fell on December 25. This change means that half a century or so ago, we needed just slightly over one Earth to provide for us. In 2024, we need 1.75 Earths — something we clearly don’t have. Countries in Europe are also massively over-consuming — Belgium has the dubious honour of having a biocapacity deficit of 490 per cent, compared to a 240 per cent deficit for the UK or a 110 per cent gap for the US. On the other side of the fence, there are the Bahamas, Brazil, Finland or Canada, which manage to consume less than their resources offer.
GDP had a purpose to serve, to rebuild after years of devastation. But we are living today in a very different reality, where the blinkered focus solely on growth and the complete ignorance of ecological wealth perspectives is causing serious damage to people and prosperity.
