Panel discussion held to talk hurricane and climate change

The talk, which featured opening and closing remarks by the panelists sandwiching a questions and answers session, also dealt with the relationship between extreme weather events and climate change. As explained by Balser in response to a comment from the audience, while hurricanes and tropical storms are not new to Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, studies have shown their frequency and intensity are being exacerbated by climate change.

“I'm a career logger who worked with horses for the past 35 years, and here I am, at the age of 73, going back to the woods,” Wood said following the forum. “Not because I want to but because I have no other choice at the present time, because it's a big salvage operation. “The time necessary to respond to all the issues relating to Fiona would have taken many more hours than we had here today,” David said.

David’s advice to woodlot owners was to treat a clean-up as they would any other construction around their property and get multiple quotes before accepting. He also talked about how busy they’ve been since Fiona. It’s a problem both politicians took note of and talked about in both their opening and closing remarks.

“I think the other important point to look at is, in 2022, it becomes very clear infrastructure for those types of things is essential infrastructure … as essential as electricity. I think all of us now realize that,” Ellis said.
