to party members, Lewis accused the media, the Liberals and even Conservatives of perpetuating racist stereotypes about her party, and said the narrative that only Brown — or, in his absence, Jean Charest — could win over ethnic communities was offensive.
Lewis made history in the Conservatives’ 2020 leadership race as the first Black woman ever to run for the party’s top job. She emigrated from Jamaica to Canada as a child and eventually became a lawyer, living and working in Toronto. Lewis hails from the social conservative wing of the party, and is the only one of the contest’s five candidates who advocates for greater restrictions on abortion — a policy she also campaigned on in 2020.
“I represent the exact kind of voter and politician they say matters to them, and yet they constantly ignore me, even suggesting that only two white males in our party can appeal to minorities,” she wrote. Before he was disqualified from the race earlier this month, Brown campaigned on a theme of building bridges with ethnic communities he argued had been treated shabbily by the party in recent years, and laid claim to the mantle of wanting to build a multi-faith, multicultural coalition and being the only candidate able to deliver one.“He was free, as all of us leadership candidates are, to make an appeal to the conservative values that they have. But they did not belong to him,” she wrote.
He has said the rejection of his candidacy also amounted to a rejection of the thousands of people he signed up in support of his bid, andurged his supporters to back Charest, although on Monday he also named fellow candidate Scott Aitchison as someone who shares his vision of “inclusive conservatism.”
