He later became an Olympian Canadian boxer and was the first African Nova Scotian to win a light middleweight bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Between 1870 and 1887, the Merchants opened 25 branches throughout the Maritimes and also expanded to Quebec, New York, Bermuda , and London, UK. By 1893, it was listed on the Montreal Exchange. By 1897, it had opened its first branch in Western Canada in Vancouver. All these expansion activities took place under the 38-year presidency of Halifax born, Thomas E. Kenny .
