Raine Maida on marriage, music and the Maritimes | SaltWire- Newfoundland merchant sailor, Jack Randall arrived in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and enlisted to fight in the Boer War.
Upon his return to Canada, he would later also serve in the First World War, becoming a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve. After the war, by 1928, Jack Randall was skipper of the two-masted rum-running schooner I’m Alone. It was a year earlier, on 13 August 1941 when the federal government authorized the formation of the C.W.A.C. to enlist thousands of women in “support roles for the armed forces.” The initiative came about after a great deal of lobbying by many women across the country who wanted to join the war effort. The C.W.A.C. had already been preceded by the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force , and the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service .
Following his by-election win in 1967, Stanfield would suffer a landslide defeat in the 1968 federal election to the incumbent Liberals led by their new leader, Pierre Elliott Trudeau. It was deemed later that there had been poor fire precautions and incompetence during the emergency. It is recorded that while out hunting one day, Francklin was captured by a band of hostile indigenous and taken captive to the Gaspé region for three months. The experience taught him the rudiments of their language and a respect for their culture. By 1777, Francklin was appointed Superintendent. of what was then called, Indian Affairs, for the province, and became familiar with the concerns of Mi’kmaq chiefs. As mentioned, when he died he was arranging with several Mi’kmaq chiefs various winter supplies of blankets and clothing. His public funeral took place at St. Paul’s Church in Halifax on 11 November where it is recorded that over 200 Mi’kmaq followed his coffin to the church where he was buried in a vault at the left of the altar.
