The building was designed by Chief Dominion Architect, Thomas Fuller who was also one of the principal architects in designing the Parliament buildings in Ottawa .

Shortly after the fire, the city passed a law that required new buildings in the downtown area to be constructed of fire-resistant stone and brick rather than wood. However, this did not prevent another fire on the night of 9 September 1859, called the “Granville Street Fire,” which destroyed over “three whole blocks” of downtown, including 60 buildings.

Jim and Pat were both survivors of the German Nazi bombing raids on Liverpool and Bath and later were post-war emigrants to Canada, eventually meeting in the library stacks at McGill University when Pat was a librarian. They were married in 1959 and came to Nova Scotia in 1967.- The first weekly issue of the Novascotian or Colonial Herald under Joseph Howe was published.

Smith went on to become a noted pioneer naturalist, farmer, surveyor, author and journalist. By 1801, under a commission from Lieutenant Governor Sir John Wentworth, he began to conduct extensive surveys of the province’s interior, as well as report on soil conditions, geology, various species, as well as the quality and size of timberlands. By 1808 he was also overseeing road construction for the provincial government.
