Memorial Cross to be returned to rightful owner in Australia
BERWICK, N.S. — A mystery surrounding a First World War Memorial Cross medal that turned up in Australia has been solved.
Lawrence said she felt somewhat nervous when it first appeared that they had found the medal’s owner, as there had been earlier leads that didn’t pan out. However, they were able to confirm the facts with family members of the medal’s owner who live in England.
Lawrence has an affiliation with Wabush, Labrador, where she lived for 35 years and was involved with the Legion, serving as president. Dr. Dave Campin, who lives in Australia, is a great nephew of Pte. Frederick William Daly. He is the rightful owner of a First World War Memorial Cross medal that was originally presented to Daly’s mother after Daly was killed in action in France in 1918. CONTRIBUTEDThe medal had been presented to Daly’s mother, Mary Daly, while his father, William Daly, received a Memorial Plaque and Scroll. The medal was passed down through the family to Daly’s niece, Campin’s mother.

He said the house was damaged with doors being broken, but not a lot was taken. The medal was in a small Turkish cigarette box that also contained a Twin Towers rubber eraser that his wife had bought the previous year in New York.
Williamson said the fact a family member has been found in Australia completes the part of the puzzle of how the medal was found in a local township. To hear it had been stolen so many years ago and now will be returned to Campin is “a tremendous result for all concerned.”“Had it not been for Ruby’s endeavours and hard work, this result may never have been achieved,” Williamson said.
