He was a Heisman Trophy winner, a two-time All-American and was considered one of Notre Dame's greatest players

Lujack, a native of Connellsville, Pa., 36 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was a two-time unanimous All-American in football at Notre Dame and was a monogram winner in four sports.

He led the Fighting Irish to three national championships, and in 1947, he took home the Heisman Trophy and was selected the Associated Press’ Athlete of the Year. Lujack’s best season came in his 1947 Heisman season, when he completed 61-of-109 passes for 777 yards and nine touchdowns, ran for 139 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

Known for his offensive skills, Lujack is also remembered for a game-saving tackle he made against Army in preserving Notre Dame’s undefeated season in 1946. Lujack was drafted by the National Football League’s Chicago Bears, where he played for four seasons, earning All-Pro honors twice.Thanks for visiting PennLive.
