Quebec Premier François Legault is asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to nudge Air Canada into obeying Quebec’s language law to send“a very clear signal to companies like Air Canada that they have to have their employees working in French in Montreal.”
Quebec Premier François Legault responds to the opposition during question period at the legislature in Quebec City on Oct. 7, 2021.
Quebec Premier François Legault is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to nudge Air Canada into conforming with Quebec’s language law, calling on him to send “a very clear signal to companies like Air Canada that they have to have their employees working in French in Montreal.” Legault and Trudeau are to meet in Montreal on Friday to discuss the demand by the provinces for an increase in federal funding under the Canada Health Transfer from 22 per cent to 35 per cent of total health spending.
Legault campaigned in the recent Oct. 3 Quebec election for a strong mandate to press Ottawa for full control over immigration to the province, with the goal of choosing 100 per cent French-speaking newcomers. He said accepting more than 50,000 immigrants a year would be “a bit suicidal” for French.
