A new study, published in the Journal of Health Economics, has found an unintended consequence of legalizing marijuana: More sex.
Looking at data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, researchers found that respondents in states where medical marijuana is legal reported an increase in cannabis consumption. “These results provide evidence that marijuana use has a considerable, unintended and positive effect on birth rates,” researchers noted. “Our findings suggest that behavioural factors can counteract the physiological changes from marijuana use that tend to decrease fertility,” they added.
