At least 70 people were killed and thousands more injured when two explosions occurred near the Lebanese capital's port area
Through a large swath of the Lebanese capital, houses shook, windows shattered, a pall of smoke and dust fell on the city while bloodied, bandaged victims filled the hallways of hospitals on Aug. 4, 2020.Moe Hamandi’s sister was in her kitchen in Beirut when she felt a rumble. The tremor made her move to her living room as a loud blast blew up her kitchen’s windows, and she barely escaped being slashed by the flying glass.
Mr. Hamandi, the host of a Montreal online talk show, said in an interview that he managed to reach his mother in Beirut just after the blast. His sister lives nearby.”There was an attack, there was an attack. An explosion. Something happened,” she replied. He said he heard from members of his congregation that one health centre, the Saint George Hospital, was so badly damaged it had to transfer emergency patients to other hospitals.
He noted that Lebanon was already in the midst of a financial and economic collapse, with the COVID-19 pandemic worsening its problems. ”It’s a catastrophe. A human catastrophe here. It will take an effort by all the diaspora around the world, a lot of help from governments to help through this crisis.”
