Cognitive decline can be slowed, "but replacing early education is very difficult; that is when your brain is actively developing," says science communicator and author Jay Ingram.
Staying in school is one way to lower the risk of developing dementia. Someone with less education is 60 per cent more likely to develop dementia than someone who is more educated; the risk is greater for those who left before high school than after high school — and greater for someone who left after high school than someone who completed an undergraduate degree, Ingram said.
He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2009 “for his contributions toward making complex science accessible to the public as a broadcaster, public speaker and author, and for his leadership of future generations of science journalists.” It is known that these risk factors can be controlled through such behaviours as being physically active; keeping to a healthy and balanced diet and a healthy weight; staying connected to others; limiting alcohol consumption; wearing a helmet to cycle or ski; paying attention to the quality of sleep; not smoking; preventing and managing health conditions like depression, diabetes and high blood pressure, if you have them; and reducing exposure to air pollution.
