“Sewing offers people a different relationship with the supply chain,” says Jimil Ataman, PhD candidate at UPenn studying slow fashion. The modern fast fashion industry is a toxic mess of flammable fabrics, soupy chemicals, abhorrent labor standards to which more and more people are looking at what’s available and rightly opting out.
