The Leafs are getting close to their opening day roster, but past salary cap commitments made it necessary to deal forward Sam Lafferty.
The Maple Leafs made a trade and put five players on waivers Sunday as they try to get under the NHL salary cap by Monday night.
General manager Brad Treliving’s unavoidable math problem from earlier this summer was finally addressed on Sunday, but at the expense of solid winger Sam Lafferty, who was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks for a fifth-round draft pick in 2024.That takes Lafferty’s US$1.15 million salary off the books and opens the door for Noah Gregor on the bottom six forwards depth chart.
Lafferty was one of the few NHLers to dress in Toronto’s final exhibition game on Saturday in Detroit, scoring a late-game goal in a 4-3 loss. Lafferty was included in February’s big trade with Chicago along with defenceman Jake McCabe as part of a larger package for a conditional first round pick in 2025 and a second rounder.
