Montsion defence requests more security after courthouse confrontation

Additional security measures will be coming to Const. Daniel Montsion’s manslaughter and assault trial after his defence team said Tuesday they were the target of intimidation attempts and anti-Semitic slurs within the courthouse.

A police sergeant accompanying Montsion alerted a court constable, who asked the “agitated” men to leave or face arrest. Ontario Court Justice Robert Kelly called it “a very disturbing incident” as he referenced his earlier reprimand to the public gallery over conduct that raises “issues of safety” within the courthouse.

It was the second such reprimand from the judge in these proceedings, which have been attended by a number of supporters of Abdirahman Abdi on one side of the courtroom, divided from Montsion’s supporters on the other. Tuesday began as an otherwise routine day at trial, with advanced-care paramedic Eric Langlois on the witness stand recalling the call for backup he received at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2016.
