Unionized workers at the Law Society of BC have voted overwhelmingly in favour of job action, potentially leading to a strike if a last-minute mediation fails. The Professional Employees Association (PEA), representing law society staff, is seeking adequate compensation due to inflation and ensuring paralegals are properly covered in the new agreement. While unlikely to have immediate impact on legal cases, a strike could affect the society's ability to regulate lawyers, investigate misconduct, and oversee trust accounts.
"On February 5, a tentative agreement was reached between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association , the union representing staff lawyers, paralegals, a legal editor and some officer employees. The tentative agreement is subject to ratification by the Benchers and those staff represented by the PEA. That process is expected to occur in the next week. The tentative agreement, if ratified, will be retroactive to January 1, 2025.
The society is a self-regulating industry body that investigates misconduct and, importantly, scrutinizes lawyers’ trust accounts. Society staff also play a custodial role when a lawyer is unable to oversee their firm. “This strike vote result shows that our members are serious and ready to take action to achieve their bargaining demands,” said Harper last week.
