The judge said the woman found herself in a situation in which she was struggling to deal with the girl\u0027s mental disorders as they worsened.
The girl’s death was determined to have been caused by burns to 75 per cent of her body from hot water. She also often hit her head against walls because of the multiple mental disorders she suffered from.
The judge also took note of how the niece made false claims to the police and told investigators the girl was under her mother’s care the entire time. Poulin noted in his decision that the woman’s niece was not charged with a crime. When the woman pleaded guilty in February, to failing to provide the necessities of life to her child over five days between Dec. 30, 2020 and Jan. 3, 2021, the judge twice wondered aloud why the niece wasn’t charged as well.
