The Cavanagh Bump on Highway 7 is back, just one year after extensive repair work to repair the dangerous hump

Play Video

It’s caused when the soil above a large drainage culvert freezes and expands in winter. The culvert lets cold air in under the road surface, causing it to freeze and heave higher than the surrounding soil. Last summer, the bump grew so large that electronic signs were put in place warning drivers to reduce speed to 80 km/h. Some unsuspecting drivers — and more than a few daredevils — claimed to go airborne when they hit the bump at speed.

The 2022 work began June 19 and was completed in time for the Canada Day long weekend. The bump signs were back for Canada Day 2023.
