Kristaps Porzingis, coming off a career season, has been ruled out of the upcoming FIBA World Cup, Latvia announced Tuesday after initially denying reports Porzingis would be unavailable.Porzingis, the 7-foot-3 gunner who averaged 23.2 points in 2022-23 and shot nearly 39% from three, has plantar fasciitis and will work to get healthy for his first season with the Boston Celtics, who acquired him from the Washington Wizards earlier this summer.

“It is difficult, I feel very responsible to myself and the supporters of the Latvian national team, but a decision has been made that I will not play in the World Cup,” Porzingis said in a translated statement. “After several weeks of recovery and a repeat MRI examination, the plantar fasciitis of my foot still prevents me from being on the field in full readiness.

Canada will face France on Aug. 25 and Lebanon on Aug. 27. The team, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett, just beat Germany to win the DBB SuperCup in Germany and will play more tuneup games in Spain later this week. It’s still unclear whether Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray will be up for playing after his championship-winning season which followed a long injury layoff.
