One person dies every 34 seconds in the US from cardiovascular disease, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Task Force's guidanceSpecifically, the USPSTF guidance published Tuesday in JAMA recommends statins for adults ages 40 to 75 who have one or more risk factors of cardiovascular disease and a 10% or greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years.
"Having this conversation does not mean you need to be put on a therapy, but it will lead to a lot of important discussions even related to your lifestyle," Virani said.And statins, of course, aren't the only way to help a person prevent a heart attack or stroke.
