“I saw the ball going through to him and I saw his face,” Bae said. “I got a little bit of shock. I was just feeling really sorry about him. It was an accident. Nothing we can do. Just praying, watching him.” Misiewicz, who was clocked near his left ear, dropped to his knees and had a deer-in-the-headlights look for a few seconds, but was alert the entire time.
By night’s end, the Yankees were optimistic but not totally certain that Misiewicz had avoided serious injury. A quick exam by a Pirates doctor brought positive results, but Misiewicz was sent to a Pittsburgh hospital for most tests. “You feel a little better when you get out there and he’s kind of coherent and talking, but we’ve got to take every caution right now,” Boone said.
