Latest investigation into Oakland Fire finds some inspectors aren’t certified
, a new investigation has found that nearly half of the personnel currently in charge of inspections are not fully certified to do their jobs., released Thursday by City Auditor Courtney Ruby, concludes that three of the department’s four fire inspectors, along six of their supervisors, do not actively hold the certifications listed in their job requirements.
The department’s inspection bureau is not only responsible for inspecting commercial buildings and apartments, but also vegetation management in Oakland hills, where a 1991 firestorm killed 25 people and destroyed 3,000 homes. Those certifications can be obtained through trainings offered by several state and national fire organizations.
But the auditor began investigating the allegation in December 2021 after a second complaint made similar accusations against the same fire inspection supervisor. In this case, the department’s false claim to the auditor “appears to have been based on a mistaken assumption” that the employees were already cleared because Human Resources had deemed them eligible to be hired, the report states.
