Late-blooming Darrell Luter could be South Alabama’s next NFL prospect.
following a season in which he totaled four interceptions and 10 pass breakups and — according to PFF research — allowed just a 26% catch rate on balls thrown into his coverage territory. He’s considered a strong candidate to be invited to play in next year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl, which would put him on track to join former Jaguars Gerald Everett , Jeremy Reaves and Jalen Tolbert at the next level.
Indeed, Luter played on a loaded team at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Miss., graduating in 2018. Six of his teammates signed with FBS schools, including quarterback John Rhys Plumlee , defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy and linebacker Hayes Maples . Luter worked mostly as the third corner his first season with the Jaguars, but blossomed when Wommack and cornerbacks coach Dwike Wilson took over in 2021. Wilson, who coached current San Francisco 49er Charvarius Ward some years ago at Hinds Community College, said he has no doubt that Luter has an NFL future.
While Luter has one cornerback spot locked down, there is plenty of competition this spring on the other side. Two-year contributor Ryan Melton is back, joined by transfer newcomers Jamar Richardson and Marquise “Cuddie” Robinson in a three-way race for first-team reps. • Miller’s fellow Indiana transfer, outside linebacker D.K. Bonhomme, has not yet practiced due to a knee injury that Wommack said will not require surgery, but will cause him to miss the entire spring. The third former Hoosier on the South Alabama roster this spring, defensive lineman C.J. Person, has also been limited due to injury, but is on track to return soon.
